Atoms

1. nucleus

   • in the middle of the atom
   • contains protons and neutrons
     • protons = positively charged
     • neutrons have no charge = neutral
   • overall positive charge

2. electrons

   • move around the nucleus
   • negativly charged
   • occupy shells around the nucleus
   • if electrons are added or removed, the atom becomes charged and is then an ion

3. atoms have no charge overall - they are neutral

4. the charge on the electrons is the same as the protons but opposite
