Current policies: troubled family programme
Conservative government: aim to reduce dependency on welfare state, vote catcher
Spend 400 million pounds to assist families with
difficulties, will eventually cost 1.3 billion pounds and help half a million
families
Didn’t help with criminal offence
Aimed to help people who weren’t working and
were in trouble, families who were costing the state a lot of money
Get kids into schools, parents into work and
less police callouts where the aim
If rates decreased then families were seen as ‘turned
around’
Most has 100% success rate but really are the ‘turned
around’ families actually being helped or has their problems just been reduced
Ideology is to reduce the cost of antisocial
behaviour and benefit dependency
They want families to become self-reliant and
taking responsibility
Seite 2
Concerns
Moral panic to adolescents (public reaction to a person/group created by the media)
Amount of dependency on benefits
Society being unstable
Environment not being safe
Seite 3
Success rate:
Freedom of information act was used to get a more accurate account of success rate from authorities
Success rate was 100% in some areas but many deemed this inaccurate
Many local authorities just said this to prove that the programme was working
They considered a family to be fixed when the family was 'turned around' when actually this just meant there rates had decreased e.g. crime rates
