Thrombosis
A process used by the body to prevent lost of blood being lost when a blood vessel is damaged.
When an atheroma ruptures the artery wall becomes damaged and rough, and collagen is exposed This triggers thrombosis A blood clot can cause a blockage, limiting the blood flow to tissues
Atheromas increase the risk of Thrombosis
Thromboplastin is released from damages artery wall Thromboplastin catalyses prothrombin, soluble protein, into thrombin, an enzyme. Thrombin catalyses the reaction of fibrinogen, soluble protein into fibrin, insoluble. Fibrin are long, solid, insoluble fibres Fibrin fibres form a mesh, trapping platelets and red blood cells, leading to a formation of a clot. If coronary arteries become blocked by a clot it can lead to myocardinal infarction
