Alright so today's topic is stratification.

It sounds tough but it's pretty simple.

Stratification is the division of something, for instance in science the Stratification of the earth is the layers of the earth e.g mantle, crust etc. Furthermore, social stratification is the division of society into rankings. There's a ladder and we all fall somewhere on there. Stratification is mainly based on economic level.

*Social Stratification:

*Society's categorisation into rankings.

*Based on wealth, income, race, etc.

*Types of Stratification:

*Closed systems have little change in social position, no shifts in levels, or interact with different levels.

*Open systems: based on achievement, allow movement.

This doesn't sound very sociological so lets be extra to get that A*.

*clears throat* eh eh hem.

There are various types of stratification. Stratification is the division of society in regards to income, wealth and race. One which inhibits social mobility which is the closed system; also known as the "caste" system and one which encourages social mobility: open systems. In the closed system it is difficult and in some cases impossible to interact with individuals in other social classes. India is a prime example of this. Open systems are generally based on meritocracy. Meritocracy is prevalent in westernised areas such as the UK and USA more so than areas such as India that may have more of a caste outlook. Meritocracy is where you earn your position in society based on merit however in India you are born into your position.

If this was a question on what is stratification and you didn't get full marks then I'd be surprised af. I've literally explained what stratification is and what the things are that make up stratification. Then I have given examples and explained further. If you don't get full marks then I just feel sorry for you tbh.

MOVING ON...

*Systems of Stratification

*Caste system: closed system, born into social standing and stay there.

- Work and marry within the caste. (Restrictions in marriage - only Endogamous marriages not Exogamous.)

- Socialised into acceptance. (They begin to accept their position and just take it as it is.)

- Fate, destiny, will of a higher power. (Believe they will be reincarnated into higher classes if they're good in this life.)

*Class Systems: based on both social factors and individual achievement.

*Class: set of people who share similar status in terms of wealth, income, education, occupation.

*People can form EXOGAMOUS marriages (marrying someones outside your social category) or endogamous (marrying within social category).
