The Suffragettes were Effective Their actions meant that the issue of female suffrage was never forgotten. They were effective campaigners - published leaflets and posters. 'Votes for Women' newspaper had a circulation of 40,000 by 1914. Many men and women admired their willingness to suffer for their cause.
The Suffragettes Were Not Effective They didn't achieve the vote in 1914. They divided the women's movement from 1909. Their violence turned some MPs and sections of public opinion away from the cause. They were often treated very harshly by police and in prison and went on hunger strikes. They were then force-fed which was dangerous, painful and degrading - 'Cat and Mouse Act' of 1913.
