What does starch, proteins and fats all have in common? They are all big molecules
What can't big molecules do? Pass through the walls of the digestive system
What do sugars, amino acids, glycerol and fatty acids all have in common? They are all smaller molecules
What are smaller molecules good at? Passing through the walls of the digestive system
What do digestive enzymes do to bug molecules? They break them down into smaller molecules
What are Amylase, Protease and Lipase? Digestive enzymes
Where is Amylase produced (3 places)? 1) The salivary glands 2) The pancreas 3) The small intestine
What does Amylase digest and what does it turn into? Amylase converts starch into sugars
Where is Protease produces (3 places)? 1) the stomach 2) the pancreas 3) The small intestine
What does Preotease digest and what does it turn into? Protease converts proteins into amino acids
Where is Lipase produced (2 places)? 1) The pancreas 2) the small intestine
What does Lipase digest and whet does it turn into? Lipase converts lipids (fats and oils) into glycerol and fatty acids
What 2 things does bile do? Neutralises the stomach acid and emulsifies fats
Where is bile produced? In the stomach
Where is bile stored? In the gall bladder
Where is bile released? into the small intestine
What conditions do the enzymes in the small intestine work best in? Alkaline conditions
How does emulsifying fats affect it? It breaks the fat down into little droplets
How does emulsifying fats help digestion? It increases the surface area to help the lipase work which increases the rate of digestion
What produce enzymes used in the digestive system? Specialised cells in elands and the gut lining
What does the salivary glands produce? Anylase (the enzyme in saliva)
What enzyme does the stomach produce? Protease
Why does the stomach produce hydrochloric acid (2 reasons)? 1) To kill bacteria 2) To produce the right pH for protease to work in (pH 2 - acidic)
What does the liver produce? Bile
What enzymes does the pancreas produce? Protease, Amylase and Lipase
Where is excess water from food absorbed? In the large intestine
Where is digested food absorbed? In the small intestine
Where is faeces stored? In the rectum
