Universalism The assumption that phenomena observed in a study can be generalised to other contexts
Sample Subset of the population of interest that is studied in a piece of research.
Sampling The process of selecting participants for a study.
Sampling error Refers to the fact that any sample, however chosen, is unlikely to represent exactly the population from which it was drawn.
Replication When a result from a research study is found again in a subsequent study. Replication is important to establishing the reliability of a finding.
Cycle of enquiry The way in which the questions that research addresses are often derived from theories or explanations and the finding of that research then generate new questions or refinements to theory or explanation.
