Reading Chapter 6 Decimals

6:01 Review of Decimal

How many decimal point does 734•625 have? (a) 3

How many decimal point does 8745•5872 have? (a) 4

How many decimal point does 734•625+8745•5872 have? (a) 7. 6/10 +

4/100? How can we calculate this if on is /10 and other /100? Just add Zeroes.

Just remember what you do to the top you must do to the bottom. Fractions and

decimals are rational numbers. Zeroes at the end of a decimal don’t change its

value.

6:02 Addition and

Subtraction of decimal

To add or sub decimals, use the PUP rule; Place Points Under Points. Any empty spaces

can be filled with zero.

test

E.g. 9.05 + 10.25 = (19.30)

6:03 Multiply a decimal

by a whole number

When multiplying a decimal by a whole

number, the number of digits after the decimal point is the same in the

question as in the answer. When multiplying by 10, 100, 1000, we move the

decimal point 1, 2 or 3, places to the right. (E.g. 0.81 x 10 = 8.1)

6:04 Dividing a decimal

by a whole number

When dividing a decimal by a whole

number, place the decimal point in the answer below the decimal point in the

question. When dividing by 10, 100, 1000, we move the decimal point 1, 2 or 3,

places to the left. *PUP. (Example: 81.3 ÷ 10 = 8.13)

6:05 Multiplying a

decimal by a decimal

Multiply as if there are no decimal

points, then use the rule to write the decimal point in your answer.

*Look at study notes from last

test

(Example: 0.03² = 0.03
