Inverse Variation- Multiply Numbers in table to find if it is an inverse variation equation. The graph will be two separate curved lines that don't intersect the y axis or the origin.

CONSTANT: k=xy

EQUATION= k/x f(x) = k/x

Function: Relation/ every element of the domain is assigned to exactly one element of the range.

No repeating x values

Vertical line test

Domain: The set of allowable inputs (x)

Range- The set of allowable outputs (y)

Is it a function?

Make sure the x values don't repeat.

Absolute value graphs are V shaped.

If they point up they are positive.

If they point down- negative.

f(x)=lx+8l = f(11) answer is always positive.

8-3lx+2l

8-3(-4)

8+12

For direct linear variation in a table, divide.

Direct variation passes through the origin

Function notation is f(x). For example.

f(x)=6-2x find f(-2) just plug in the numbers.

Like radicals: 2sq5 +4sq5

(2+4)sq5

6sq5

Direct variation equation:

Y varies directly with x y=12 and x=6 k=12/6=2 y=kx

y=2x

Quadratic Equation:

k=y/x^2 Y varies directly with x^2 y= 24

y=2 k=24/2^2 = 24/4 = 6 y= 6x^2

Inverse Variation equation:

Y varies inversely with x. y=3 =7 k=xy

k=7*3=21 y=21/x

Quadratic variation in tables: Ex: 4/1^2

Quadratic variations are parabolas (U) that passes through the origin, (0,0)

The constant is k=y/x^2
