Steps for assignment
1. Definition
2. Blueprint
There is also a supplemental reading on the test specification/blueprint (primarily pages 211-216, 218 rating scale, 221-224) which should help you better understand test specification /blueprint.
3. Nomological Net
Do not use content areas as correlations
ie. Use big 5 traitr outer option but not inner
Grit in middle (like mind map) and big 5 trait,
related but distinct construct ie IQ, academic performance, needs to 1 big 5 trait, impulsivity
must have relationship to GRIT (can be negative relationship)
include the figure
From tute slides:
Draw a small (3- 4 constructs) nomological network for your construct, indicating direction of relationship
Include references for these relationships
Include as a Figure + brief supporting text in your assignment
From this, select a BIG 5 construct to use to check the validity of your scale
Find a short, psychometrically sound scale to measure that 2nd construct to include in your questionnaire
Short 5-12 item scale, should be reliable Cronbach’s > .7
Tutor said this week to focus on working out which big 5 trait
Put in definition or methods section
DEscribe like scale from 1st year,
You will need to describe this additional BIG 5 construct and scale in your paper
Tip from tute
When selecting a related construct to use for your test of construct validity, you should :
Investigate the literature, and see what other theoretically related constructs have been identified.
Tips include a Google Scholar search for the name of your construct (GRIT), and words like correlated, phrases like “GRIT is correlated with” or “GRIT is associated with”.
You should select a BIG5 construct that will maximise your chances of demonstrating construct validity. Avoid trivial correlations like .1 .2, etc.
e.g. empathy is weakly associated with one of the Big 5, openness ~.22 (Mooradian, Davis, and Matzler)
But a GoogleScholar search will outline that empathy is strongly correlated with Big 5 agreeableness, so this might be a better choice.
4. Demographics
You will need to measure a few (approx. 3- 5) demographic items in your questionnaire
Gender
Describe sample
Test bias in the items
Age
Essential to describe your sample
Any other demographic details that might be relevant:
Are you a university student?
Anything relevant to correlations ie. GPA
To describe your specific sample adequately (what might be relevant descriptors)
Should be able to fit all on one short page of questionnaire
