- 1StereoisomersHave the same structural formula but have a different arrangement of bonds in space.
- 2Optical IsomersIsomers that are optically active as they rotate plane polarised light.
One enantiomer rotates the light in the clockwise direction and the other enantiomer rotates the light in the anticlockwise direction - 3Racemic MixtureContains equal quantities of each enantiomer of an optically active compound
- 4Chiral CarbonA carbon atom that has 4 different groups attached to it.
- 5EnantiomersMirror images of each other, can't be superimposed onto each other. Groups arranged in two different ways around the carbon atom.

- 7Base hydrolysisWhen an ester is broken down into a carboxylate ion and an alcohol by refluxing it with a dilute alkali, such as NaOH.

Produced by reacting oils with methanol using KOH as a catalyst.
