Flashcards
Physics - P4
Cards in this deck (4)
- 1Atom Structure- Atoms are very small, they have a radius of 1 x 10 to the power of minus 10.
- Contain positively charged nucleus, made of protons (+1) & neutrons (0), surrounded by negatively charged electrons (-1).
- Atoms have equal amount of protons and electrons, have no overall electrical charge.
- Energy level of an electron may change when atom emits/absorbs electromagnetic radiation: absorbing radiation moves electrons to higher energy levels, further from nucleus, radiation is emitted when electron drops to lower energy level.
- Atom loses outer electrons becomes positive ion, when it gains becomes negative. - 2Isotopes- All atoms of an element have the same number of protons (atomic no. at bottom).
- Total number of protons and neutrons is mass no. at top.
- Atoms of same element can have different no. of neutrons - isotopes. - 3Plum Pudding Model- Atom model has changed.
- Once thought to be tiny spheres, that couldn't be divided.
- JJ Thompson in 1897, discovered electrons, which led to plum pudding model - depicts atom as a ball of positive charge with electrons embedded. - 4—
