Flashcards
Periodic table
Cards in this deck (5)
- 1The elements are arranged in the periodic table in order of their atomic number The number of electrons in the outer most shell is the group number This means all the elements in the same group react in the same way.The period (row) tells us the number of electron shells
There are 92 naturally occuring elemnts, 3/4 of which are metals - 2Metal atoms lose their outer most electron, forming positive ion surrounded by a sea of delocalised mobile electrons.Typical metals are: shiny, ductile, conductors of heat and electricity, strong and have a high melting point
- 3Group 1 metals are very different:Lithium 2.1 EC
-Stored in oil to prevent it from reacting with Oxygen
-dark grey, shiny when out
- goes grey again easily, easy to cut
In water:
-Floats
-Moves
-Dissolves
-Effervescence - 4Sodium 2.8.1 EC -Grey/silver -Cuts like butter In water: -forms a ball -does everything that Li does -UI goes bluePotassium 2.8.8.1 EC
-same features as Li & Na
In water:
- all in Li+Na
-Lilac flame without using splint - 5When Universal Indicator is added it turns blue. Alkali metals produce alkalis in water- in this case Lithium HydroxideThe gas given off puts out a lighted splint with a squeaky pop. This is Hydrogen.
Lithium+Water~Lithium Hydroxide+Hydrogen
2Li+2h20~2LiOH+H2
