- 1What is distance?Distance is a scalar quantity that refers to "how much ground an object has covered" during its motion. Displacement is a vector quantity that refers to "how far out of place an object is"; it is the object's overall change in position.
- 2How do you calculate distance?Distance = speed X Time
- 3What is speed?Speed is the distance traveled per unit of time. It is how fast an object is moving. Speed is the scalar quantity that is the magnitude of the velocity vector. It doesn't have a direction. Higher speed means an object is moving faster.
- 4How do you calculate speed?Speed = Distance / time
- 5What is time?Time in physics is defined by its measurement: time is what a clock reads. In classical, non-relativistic physics it is a scalar quantity and, like length, mass, and charge, is usually described as a fundamental quantity.
- 6How do you calculate time?Time = Distance / speed
- 7What is acceleration? In physics, acceleration is the rate of change of velocity of an object with respect to time. An object's acceleration is the net result of all forces acting on the object, as described by Newton's Second Law.
- 8How do you calculate acceleration?acceleration = velocity / time
- 9What is motion? In physics, motion is the change in the position of an object over time. Motion is mathematically described in terms of displacement, distance, velocity, acceleration, speed, and time. ... As there is no absolute frame of reference, absolute motion cannot be determined.
- 10About displacement time graphsOn a displacement-time graph:
slope equals velocity. The "y" intercept equals the initial displacement. When two curves coincide, the two objects have the same displacement at that time.
straight lines imply constant velocity.
curved lines imply acceleration.
an object undergoing constant acceleration traces a portion of a parabola. Average velocity is the slope of the straight line connecting the endpoints of a curve.
instantaneous velocity is the slope of the line tangent to a curve at any point.
positive slope implies motion in the positive direction.
negative slope implies motion in the negative direction. Zero slope implies a state of rest. The area under the curve is meaningless - 11About velocity time graphsOn a velocity-time graph:
slope equals acceleration.
the"y" intercept equals the initial velocity.
when two curves coincide, the two objects have the same velocity at that time. Straight lines imply uniform Acceleration.
curved lines imply non-uniform acceleration. An object undergoing constant acceleration traces a straight line.
average acceleration is the slope of the straight line connecting the endpoints of a curve. Instantaneous acceleration is the slope of the line tangent to a curve at any point. Positive slope implies an increase in velocity in the positive direction.
negative slope implies an increase in velocity in the negative direction.
zero slope implies motion with constant velocity. The area under the curve equals the change in displacement. - 12About acceleration time graphsOn an acceleration-time graph…
slope is meaningless.
the"y" intercept equals the initial acceleration.
when two curves coincide, the two objects have the same acceleration at that time.
an object undergoing constant acceleration traces a horizontal line.
zero slope implies motion with constant acceleration.
the area under the curve equals the change in velocity. - 13Breaking distanceThe braking distance (BD) is the distance required to stop once the brakes have been engaged, and static friction between the tires and the road are the dominant retarding force slowing the car to a stop. Adding these two distances together gives us the stopping distance (SD).
