Training for flexibility

Ben Barnes English 7 cards

Cards in this deck (7)

  1. 1Training for flexibilityFlexibility training plays an important part in injury prevention and is beneficial for sporting performance. Sports people whose joints can move through their full range of movement are more able to perform specific sporting techniques correctly.
  2. 2Static stretchingThe participant gets into a position to target a specific muscle or muscle group, and holds the position to develop the stretch.
  3. 3Dynamic stretchingDynamic stretching involves gradually increasing the range of movement of a muscle or group of muscles over a series of repetitions
  4. 4Advantages and disadvantages of static stretchingAdvantage:
this helps to increase flexibility and specific areas of the body required for particular sports.
    Disadvantage:
High levels of motivation are needed to carry out exercises regularly.
  5. 5Advantages and disadvantages of dynamic stretchingAdvantage:
This helps to maintain as elevated heart rate, so it’s good to include in a warm-up to help get the body ready for training
    Disadvantage:
If a participant is not sufficiently warmed up, dynamic stretching could cause injury as they might overstretch when carrying out the movement
  6. 6Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretchingPNF stretching requires a partner to provide resistance.
1-The participant stretches the muscle or muscle group as far as possible
2-The partner holds the body part being stretched while the participant pushes against the partner for 6-10 seconds
3-The participant then relaxes the muscle while the partner pushes the body part to increase the stretch
This process is repeated about three times
  7. 7Advantages and disadvantages of PNFAdvantage:
    - it helps to develop flexibility at a faster rate than other types of flexibility raining
    Disadvantages:
-another person is needed and so the stretches cannot be performed alone.
    - there is a risk of injury if the stretching partner lacks experience
