Cards in this deck (14)
- 1What is the definition of solution? The Definition of a solution is, when a solid has dissolved in a liquid.
- 2What Is the definition of a mixtureThe definition of a mixture is, two or more minerals which are not chemically joined.
- 3How does filtering work?Filter paper is in a funnel which is going into a conical flask. The filter paper allows small molecules to pass through the holes in the paper however it does not allow particles bigger than the hole to pass through.
- 4Why does filtering not separate a solute from a solution?Filtering paper can not separate a solute from a solution because the solute has dissolved within the liquid .
- 5What happens to partials when a solid dissolves? The particles of the solid dissolve and mix with the particles of the liquid.
- 6What is a saturated solution?A saturated solution is a solution which can not hold any more solute because it is holding its maximum!
- 7What Variables affect the amount solute that dissolves?-The temperature of the liquid. (if cold less dissolves if warm more dissolves)
-The solubility of the solute. (The amount of solid that will dissolve per 100 g)
-The Saturation of the liquid. - 8How do you find out the amount of salt in water?Measure the mass of the water, then proceed to evaporate it. Then measure the mass of the salt, the subtract the mass of the salt from the original mass.
- 9How can salt be attained from sea water and mines?Sea water- Allow the heat of the sun to evaporate the sea water for us. The main salt in sea water is called sodium chloride (common salt)
Mines- Can be mined or by pumping water into the ground. This frms a substance called brine which needs to be evaporated to remove the salt. - 10What is chromatography?Chromatography is separating dissolved substances from one another for example juice!
- 11How does chromatography work?Different chemicals are made of different particles of different sizes. When they are dissolved in a liquid, the different particles travel through special paper at different speeds.
- 12What is pure water?Pure Water is water with no chemicals dissolved In it.
- 13How do you distil water? The water is heated. It then evaporates into the Liebig condenser (the outer tube is filled with cold water) then the water flows down into the beaker.
- 14Why does distillation produce pure water?Because the chemicals are evaporated and separated from the water!
