Bradley Croucher English 5 cards

Cards in this deck (5)

  1. 12 Classic methods for measuring object knowledge in infantsPreferential looking/visual preference; difference in looking time implies discrimination (requires counterbalancing and other variables controlled)
Habituation; repitition of stimulus to infant until little interest shown. Interest recovery with new item indicates discrimination
  2. 2What can be concluded from equal looking time in a visual preference task?Nothing! Infant could be equally interested in both objects, bored, or unable to distinguish them
  3. 32 Occulsion Studies (Show development of object unity)Kellman & Spelke (1983) - After habituation, 4m/os look longer at broken rod.
Slater et al (1990) - Newborns look longer at complete rod; newborns appear to treat the evidence literally, without inferences.
  4. 4What is a stage III error? And what did Piaget conclude?6-9m/os fail to search for a hidden object, unless only partially occluded. Towards end of period may search if object fully hidden as they are reaching for it.
Infants don't understand object permanence; even if paritally occluded, their movements reconstitute missing bits.
  5. 5What is a stage IV error? And what did Piaget conclude? From ~9-12 months, infants retrieve covered objects. However make A-not-B error.
Infant believes moving hand to A recreates the object; object existence dictated by own actions, due to incomplete understanding object resides where hidden
