- 1What features must an OS have?Resource Management
(Processor, File, I/O)
User Interface
Data Security
Utility Software - 2What are Utility Programs?Utility Programs are software, which are used to maintain, configure, and optimize the performance of a computer.
- 3What does a Disk Formatter do?Prepares a disk for initial use, "formats" the disk, by splitting up the disk into small sections for easier data handling.
- 4What is Fragmentation? When data is written in non-contiguous sections, so it is essentially 'scattered' across the hard disk, slowing the rate of data retrieval.
- 5What is Defragmentation? The process of reorganizing 'fragmented' data, back into contiguous sectors, increasing the rate of data retrieval.
- 6What are the responsibilities of Disk Check/repair software?Checks the disk for errors and fixes them, and attempts to recover data from corrupted sections of the hard disk.
- 7What is Back-Up utility software? This software creates a backed up copy of all the data on a hard disk, which is usually compressed to save space. Can be copied to a new hard disk, if the old one is damaged or needs to be replaced.
- 8What are Library Programs?Collections of resources, functions, and sub-routines, which can be referenced when writing a complex program (or any program).
- 9Why are Libraries useful for programmers? They can reference the resources located in a library, which can be created by an individual and shared across the internet. This saves time and space, so programmers don't need to rewrite functions over and over again, risking errors.
- 10Why would a programmer use a Compiler over a Interpreter?Produces a executable file, which can be run without the source code, increasing data security. Additionally, produces faster code, so the program will run faster.
- 11Why would a programmer use an Interpreter, instead of a Compiler? Can be used on multiple platforms, easy to test, as it can be run directly from the source code, through the use of a 'run-time environment'
- 12What is an Assembler? An Assembler translates Assembly Language to Machine code. This is quick because Assembly language has a 1:1 relationship with machine code.
- 13How does an Interpreter work?An Interpreter partially compiles high-level programming languages, by reading the source code one line at a time, and executing them in order. A virtual machine is often used to run the software, allowing it to be used in different platforms.
