Cards in this deck (40)

  1. 1what does the cpu stand forcentral processing unit
  2. 2what is the purpose and the main role of the cputo process programmes and data by repeatedly fetching an instruction form memory and executing it.
  3. 3what are the three components of the cpucontrol unit.
    arithmic logic unit.
    immediate access store.
  4. 4what is the role of the cu in the cputhe control unit of the cpu is responsible for fetching and decoding instructions and managing their execution on the processor.
  5. 5what is the role of the aluthe alu is where the cpu performs the arithmetic and logic operations.
  6. 6what is the role of iasstores all the programmes and data temporarily whilst they are in use. these programs and data are also stored permanently on an external storage device such as a hard disc
  7. 7what is the fetch execute cyclethe steps a cpu goes through in order to process an instruction
  8. 8what is the role of the program counter in the fetch execute cyclestores the adress of the next instruction to be fetched.
  9. 9what is the role of the memory adress register in the fetch execute cyclethe address of the current instruction or data being executed is temporarilly stored in the memory adress register
  10. 10what is the role of the memory data register in the fecth execute cycletemporarily store data being fetched from or written to the main memory of the cpu. all data transferred from the main memory to the cpu goes via the mdr.
  11. 11what is the role of instruction register in the fetch execute cycletemporarily stores the current instructions to be decoded and then executed having been fetched from the main memory.
  12. 12describe the process of the fetch execute cyclethe program counter copies the adress of the next instruction it contains into the memory adress register. the memory adress register places the adress to be used on to the adress bus . the instruction on the data bus is loaded into the memory data register. the memory data register copies the instruction into the instruction register. the instruction in the instruction register is executed by the cpu. this will generally involve the alu carrying out a calculation. now that the cpu is executing an instruction the program counter can now be reset to the point to the next instruction
  13. 13what is the clock speedthe clock speed of the cpu indicates how fast a cpu can run/operate.
  14. 14what is cachecache memory is used for the temporary storage of frequently used instructions and data
  15. 15what is the processor corea single processor with its own cu,alu and registers
  16. 16what are the input devicesmicrophones, mouse, graphics digitiser and touch screen
  17. 17what are the output devicesspeakers,laser printers,3d printers
  18. 18what is the advantages of a microphonereadily availble in smart phones, tablets,pc's,etc
  19. 19what are the disadvantages of microphonessometimes picks up backround noise
  20. 20what are the advantages of mousesallows a user to control a computer using a gui
  21. 21what are the disadvantages of mousesrequires a certain amount of dexterity to use
can be inaccurate when interpreting precise movements
  22. 22what are the advantages of graphics digiterscan create more accurate digital hand drawings than a mouse
  23. 23what are the disadvantages of graphics digitisersrelativley expensive
requires a certain level of expertise to operate
  24. 24what are advantages of touch screenboth an input and output
    very easy to use
  25. 25what are the disadvantages of touch screenscan become dirty overtime
small objects/icons on screen may be hard to touch accuratley
can be even less accurate than a mouse for precise work
  26. 26what are the advantages of speakersallows users to hear music, voices or communications directly from the computer
  27. 27what are the disadvantages of speakerssome internal speakers have poor sound quality
  28. 28what are the advantages of laser printerscan print large numbers of pages quickly and in high quality
  29. 29what are the disadvantages of laser printersmore expensive than some other types of printer
cost to place toner is relativley high
  30. 30what are the advantages of 3d printersallows for rapid production of prototypes and the ability to customise the products you are printing
  31. 31what are the disadvantages of 3d printersstill very expensive and their use is limited by size constraints
  32. 32what is internal memoryany memory that is directly accessed by the cpu
  33. 33what is external memoryused for holding large amounts if data and programs long-term but can only be accessed relativley slowly
  34. 34what is violatile memorymemory that loses its data once power to a computer is switched off or interrupted
  35. 35what is non-violitile memorymemory that does not require power to keep its data intact
  36. 36what is rama memory that can be read from or writtento
  37. 37what is ram used forto tempararily hold programs and data that are currently being used such as parts of the operating system, application software.
  38. 38what is roma
  39. 39what is rom used forto store programs that are frequently required by the computer such as the boot-up program for windows that runs automatically when the computer is switched on
  40. 40bj
