Cards in this deck (10)
- 1Reconstructive MemoryRecall that is hypothesized to work by storing abstract features that are used to construct memory during recall.
- 2SchemaA mental codification of experience that includes a particular organized way of perceiving cognitively and responding to a complex situation or set of stimuli
- 3Explicit MemoryThe conscious, intentional recollection of previous experiences and information. People use explicit memory throughout the day when they remember events. Explicit memory involves conscious recollection.
- 4ImplicitImplicit memory is a type of memory in which previous experiences aid the performance of a task without conscious awareness of these previous experiences. Evidence for implicit memory arises from priming, a process where subjects are measured on how they improve when they are subconsciously prepared.
- 5Flash Bulb MemoryA highly detailed, exceptionally vivid snapshot of the moment and circumstances in which a piece of surprising and consequential news was heard. Evidence has shown that people may be highly confident in their memories, but the details may be forgotten.
- 6ChunkingThe assimilation of different items
- 7Short Term Memory ("Primary" or "Active" Memory)The capacity for holding a small amount of information in mind in an active readily available state for a short period of time. The duration is known to be in the order of seconds.
- 8Long Term MemoryThe final stage of the dual memory model proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin, in which data can be stored for long periods of time. Information can remain indefinitely. Long term memory is broken down into explicit memory, which includes episodic memory, semantic memory, autobiographical memory and implicit memory.
- 9AmygdalaTw nuclei located medially in the temporal lobes of the brain. Neuroimaging has shown that the Amygdala has a significant role in mental states. Studies have shown children with a smaller left Amygdala to have social anxiety, and obsessive/compulsive disorders
- 10Outline and Evaluate: Schema TheoryKnowledge that is stored in our memory is organized as a set of schemas, which represent the general knowledge about the world, people, events, objects, actions and situations that has been acquired from past experiences.
