Flashcards
static electricity
Cards in this deck (14)
- 1how do insulating materials became electrically chargedwhen they are rubbed against each other e.g a balloon rubbing against a jumper
- 2what happens when the friction moves negatively charged electrons from one material to another-the object that gains electrons becomes negatively charged
-the object that looses electrons becomes positively charged - 3when would this effect not be seenthis effect would not be seen in conductors -they conduct the charge to the earth so it cannot build up
- 4what is an isolated objectan object that has no conducting path to earth
- 5what happens when the charge on an isolated object increasesthe potential difference between the object and the earth increases
- 6what happens when the potential difference becomes high enougha spark may jump across the gap , from the object to any earthed conductor near it
- 7what does this spark doit discharges the charged object and could be felt as an electric shock. It could also serve as a source of ignition which can be very dangerous
- 8give an example of a sparklightning-when a charge builds up in clouds during a thunderstorm
- 9what are electrostatic forcesthey are non-contact forces
- 10what are the two forces-attraction
-repulsion - 11what happens when a charged object is brought near an uncharged objectthey will attract
- 12what do charged objects create around themselveselectric fields-they can be thought of as the area around a charged object that will effect other objects
- 13what does the strength of an electric field depend on-the distance from the object-the further away from the object the weaker the field
-the amount of charge-the higher the charge the stronger the field - 14how do field diagrams work-where the field lines are close together, the field is stronger, so the force exerted on another object is stronger and the greater the chance a spark will occur
-the direction of the arrow indicates the direction that a positive charge will move in if placed in the field and explains why like charges repel and unlike charges attract
