1.2.2 Application Generation

Cards in this deck (23)

  1. 1Application softwareAny software that allows a user to carry out a task or aid them on producing something on the computer:Application software
  2. 2why may you pick one application over another?- speed, cost, hardware in order to function, memory requirements
  3. 3Cloud-based applications- no software is installed on a single computer
    - no worry about space of program or updating it
    - can be accessed from anywhere a long there is an internet connection
  4. 4Utility ProgramsSmall programs that have one specific purpose
the purpose of each utility program is more concerned with the mantince and well running of a computer system
  5. 5Anti-Virus SoftwareAny programs that help to detect and remove milieus programs which are designed to harm a computer system
  6. 6Disk FragmentationOver time this occurs as new files are added and old ones are deleted
free space becomes scattered across a disk and a program/file has to be split up into multiple small chunks and spread across the disk to make it fit
the more fragmented a disk becomes the slower the computer preforms
  7. 7Compression UtilitiesAny program that attempts to reduce the amount of physical space that files take up as they're stored
  8. 8File ManagersAllow users to easily copy/delete/rename/modify files on the computer system
  9. 9FirewallsAny programs that help prevent unauthorized access to the computer system or network
  10. 10Backing upAny program that allows for manual or automatic backing up for files
E.g. To another disk ore removable device (DVD)
  11. 11Open source– any software that is supplied with its original source code.
The source code is allowed to be altered, and the altered are allowed to be re-distributed, as long as they are also distributed as being open sourced.
  12. 12Open source: Advantages and DisadvantagesAdvantage:
Most open sourced software is also free of charge.
    Encourages mass user development
    Promotes creativity and sharing.
    Disadvantage:
    Lacks professional + finish ability
Less secure, more vulnerable to altering
  13. 13Closed sourceany software the is supplied pre-compiled
    e.g word
  14. 14Closed source: Advantages and DisadvantagesDisadvantages:
The source code is not available, often copy righted
Proprietary software – property of a company , have to pay for it
    Advantages:
    Professionalism + finished
More secure, less vulnerable to altering
  15. 15InterpretersConverting one line of high level language code and convert directly to machine code and then run it.
Used when debugging as it will run the code until it finds an error in the line.
It will require the whole source code each time it is translated. This is a security risk and will leave the code executing slowly.
  16. 16ComplierTakes the whole program and converts high level language code into object code.
This process is slow although object code can be distributed to anyone with compatible device. The Object code can run faster than the interpreted version. If update needed , the orginal source code would have to change and new version needs to be complied and distributed
  17. 17AssemblersConverting low level assembly language directly into machine code.
Each line of assembly code is converted or looked up by the assembler and translate directly into one line of binary machine code.
  18. 18Relationship of the translatorsInterpreters and complier:
One – to – many : each line translates into many lines of binary code
    Assemblers:
One – to – one relationship
  19. 19Stages of compilation (lexical analysis, syntax analysis, code generation and optimization)Stages of compilation (lexical analysis, syntax analysis, code generation and optimization)
  20. 20LibrariesPre-compiled, pre tested code with ready to use routines available to the programmer. The programmer just has to reference to the library in the code to use the code.
Come in packages e.g. Math functions, date manipulation, graphical tasks etc
  21. 21Linkers, loaders & librariesThe finish object code in Complication aren’t ready to be run yet (possible use of libraries)
The finished object code depends on some code from a libraries in order to work.
  22. 22STATIC LINKING- The job of the linker is to include links to any library code that is required, are place it into a single executed file.
All code required is in final code = LARGER SIZE COMPILED PROGRAM
  23. 23DYNAMIC LINKING- Compiled versions of the libraries are stored by the computer. An operating system links the code required directly into the program when it run.
It’s the job of the loader to include/load the programs into memory ready for use
    SMALLER SIZE COMPILED PROGRAM
