Question Answer
Explain the reasons why some Scots joined up to fight in World War One. People thought the war would be over by Christmas and were excited by the prospect of adventure as many Scottish people had never left the country Patriotism was another reason as many people thought it was their duty to protect their country Another reason was propaganda as the idea of German atrocities against Belgian civilians was played up which introduced tales of torturing and murdering children A fourth reason was the Pals Battalion as friends from the same village or workplace were encouraged to sign up together and serve alongside each other in the same regiment Another reason was sporting teams such as Heart of Midlothian had players sign up for the war. this encouraged other teams and fans to do the same A final reason was wages as the average pay for a soldier was 9 or 10 shillings which was usually more than they would get in their normal job
Describe life/conditions in the trenches Trenches were dug in zig zag lines to make it harder for the enemy to find the correct range for their artillery Due to heavy rain. soldiers often had to stand ankle deep in mud this made walking a slow and tiring process, this also lead to the spread of trench foot. There were many rats and lice in the trenches which led to soldiers having many diseases such as trench fever. Due to the extreme conditions of the trenches soldiers became mentally ill with a condition called shell shock
