Flashcards
Chemistry: Chapter 11 Test
Cards in this deck (13)
- 1Energy LevelThe levels of energy outside an atoms nucleus where there's a 90% chance electrons will be in orbitals.
- 2Valence ElectronsElectrons that occupy an atoms outermost energy level and can form chemical bonds.
- 3OrbitalRegion in an atom's energy levels where an electron of a specific energy is 90% likely to be.
- 4Electron ConfigurationThe "address" of an electron in an atom. Lists all energy levels, orbitals and electrons.
- 5Noble Gas ConfigurationShorthand configuration. Uses the last noble gas in the P orbital then the rest of the regular configuration.
- 6Emission SpectrumA spectrum of the EM radiation emitted by atoms or molecules when energy is added.
- 7Atomic RadiusMeasure of the size of an atom. Measures from center of nucleus to the outer shell boundary.
- 8Ionization energyThe amount of energy required to remove (ionize) the valence electron of an atom.
- 9Ground StateThe lowest possible energy of an atom when it is not excited at all.
- 10Sublevel(s,p,d,f) Describes where electron is on the periodic table. It denotes the different energies one electron can have in an energy level.
- 11Orbital DiagramWrites out all of the electrons in each sub level of a specific atom. It also shows the spin of each electron with arrows.
- 12Bohr's model vs Wave MechanicalBohr's model tells us electrons have fixed paths and the wave mechanical model shows us that the electrons are most likely to be found in orbitals.
- 13How is the emission spectrum the "Fingerprint" of the atom?
