Software Development Stages

James Norman OCR A level Computer Science A level English 10 cards

Cards in this deck (10)

  1. 1Software development stages (in order)1. Analysis
    2. Design
    3. Building/Testing
    4. Implementation
    5. Evaluation
  2. 2AnalysisA problem must be defined before it can be solved
Analysis stage may involve in some other order:
    1. Problem definition
    2. Feasibility
    3. Development method
    4. Solution overview
    5. Features and requirements of the new system
  3. 3DesignThe system to be developed is designed, and fine details about its operation and structure are defined
    Design may cover:
    1. Processing - algorithms and modular structure
    2. Data structures - Which ones, and where they will be used
    3. Output - Content, format, sequence, frequency, medium
    4. Input - Volume, frequency, input methods, type
    5. UI - Structure and interactivity
    6. Security - how data will be secured against malicious or accidental access/edits
    7. Hardware - Appropriate configuration, system requirements, etc.
  4. 4Building/TestingOnce the program/system has been designed, it can be developed
The program code is written in the chosen language using information from the designs
The system must be thoroughly tested both during and after its development
There are several types of testing
  5. 5Black-box testingCarried out independently of the code used in the program
Tests and test data are derived from the intended functionality of the system
  6. 6White-box testingDependent on code logic and program structure
Tests and test data derived from the individual subroutines in the program
    Will not detect missing functions
  7. 7Alpha testingCarried out by the software developer's in-house testing team
Often reveals errors and omissions in the requirements
  8. 8Beta testingSoftware package provided to a number of potential users who use the product and report problems to developers
Exposes the product to real use
Can detect problems and errors that may not be anticipated by developers
  9. 9ImplementationWhen all is thought to be satisfactory, the software is installed on the user's system and more testing will be done
New weaknesses and omissions may surface here
  10. 10EvaluationPost-implementation review
A critical examination of the system after operating for some time
The waiting period allows users and technical staff to get used to the system
Shortcomings of the system will have become apparent
The evaluation will focus on effectiveness, usability and maintainability
