Flashcards

Periodic Table Unit

Dannie Couture English 11 cards

Cards in this deck (11)

  1. 1Atomic NumberGives the number of:
protons in the nucleus of an element
    and
    electrons around the nucleus
  2. 2Atomic MassGives the mass of the element
    and
│ Atomic mass – Atomic number │= number of neutrons in the nucleus
  3. 3PeriodThe rows of the periodic table
The period number represents the number of electron shells the element will have
  4. 4GroupThe columns of the periodic table
The group number represents the number of valence electrons the element will have
  5. 5Alkali Metals1st column of the periodic table (except H)
    Possess 1 valence electron
They are soft and highly reactive
They must be stored in oil
Never found in their pure state naturally
  6. 6Alkaline Earth Metals2nd column of the periodic table
    Possess 2 valence electron
THey make up the compounds of rocks
    Highly malleable and reactive
Never found in their pure state naturally
  7. 7HalogensBefore last column of the periodic table
    Possess 7 valence electron
    They are reactive
They are known as salt creators
Often used as cleaners or disinfectants
  8. 8Noble Gases (or Inert gases)Last column of the periodic table
Possess 8 valence electron (except He which only has 2 valence electrons)
They do not react because their electron shell is full
They are found in their pure state naturally
  9. 9MetalsElements to the left of the periodic table
    (except Hydrogen)
    Usually shiny, ductile, malleable
    Often react with acids
Good conductors of heat and electricity
  10. 10Metalloids7 elements forming a "staircase" in the periodic table
    Semi-conductors
    Properties depend on conditions
  11. 11Non-metalsLocated to the right of the periodic table (including Hydrogen)
    Mostly gases
Poor conductors of heat and electricity
