ANOUK HARTMANS English 7 cards

Cards in this deck (7)

  1. 1Which word classes can occur as nominal headwords?Nouns, pronouns (ALL of us), numeral (THREE of them), gerunds (the BUILDING of the bridge), partly converted adjectives and past participles (the RICH)
  2. 2What is the difference between a definite and an indefinite determiner? Exampels!A definite determiner refers to something specific (the, that, this, Peter's, his...) while the indefinite refers to something non-specific (a, some, every, neither, any, ...)
  3. 3How do we differentiate determiners? What are some examples of predeterminers? There are three different types; the predeterminer (ALL the five activity books), the central determiner (all THE five activity books) and the postdeterminer (all the FIVE activity books)
Predeterminers: WHAT a view, SUCH a good movie, SUCH a thing, All the books, ...
  4. 4What is a premodifier in NPs? Which word classes can be premodifiers?A premodifier is a word that provides a description of the headword. Types of items that can function as premodifiers in NPs:
adjectives (DELIGHTFUL cottage), past participle (FRESHLY-PAINTED COTTAGE), verbs ending in -ing aka present participle (CRUMBLING cottage), nouns (COUNTRY cottage), gerunds (FISHING cottage), classifying Saxon genitive (children's cottage > for children, not belonging to children!!!), items converted out of adverbs (FAR-AWAY cottage), clauses (POP-DOWN-FOR-THE-WEEKEND cottage)
  5. 5Discuss complex, discontinuous and peripheral modifiers with examples.Complex> consist of more than one word (BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED books)
Discontinuous> modifier split into two, H in the middle (a DIFFERENT city FROM LONDON; from London does not postmodify city really)
Peripheral> part of phrase but more peripheral but cannot truly act as premodifiers because they are adverbs ([EVEN [the dog]] refused to eat it)
  6. 6What is the relative sequence of premodifiers? It is the tendency of premodifiers to arrange themselves in a semantic gradient from more subjective/evaluative to more objective/pure classifiers (general property>age>colour>provenance>manufacture>type)
  7. 7—
