Cards in this deck (43)
- 1Definition of a Computer SystemA computer system is a hardware and software that can be programmed.
- 2What is the purpose a CPUis to fetch, decode and execute
instructions stored in memory - 3What happens during the FDE cycle?FDE cycle is that instructions are fetched from RAM decoded executed by the CPU.
- 4What are the three C's?Cache, cores, clock speed
- 5What is a core?Is a single processor [so a multi-core is multiple processors]
- 6What is Clock speed? Its how quick the performance of a CPU is
- 7What is Cache?is a type of computer memory [which can be accessed much faster than RAM]
- 8What is hardware? Its a physical part of the computer
- 9What are the components of the CPU? (there are 5)Control Unit, Clock, Buses, Registers, Arithmetic Logic Unit [ ALU]
- 10What does each component do?ALU- manages all the calculations, comparisons, arithmetic
Clock- manages how many cycles happen per second
Buses- transports data between the components
Control Unit- tells the other components what each instructions need from them
Registers- manages specific data - 11What are the 5 different registers?MAR
MDR
CIR
PC
Acc - 12What does MAR stand for?Memory Address Register
- 13What does MDR stand for?Memory Data Register
- 14What does CIR stand for?Current Instruction Register
- 15What does PC stand for?Program Counter
- 16What does Acc stand for?Accumulator
- 17How to improve the performance of a CPU?Add more cores, cache, and clock
- 18What is the architecture commonly used in CPU?Von Neumann Architecture
- 19What does PC do?Program counter- holds the memory address of the next instruction to be fetched from primary storage
- 20What does MAR do?Memory Address Register- stores temporary data from running applications
- 21What does MDR do?stores data being transferred to and from the immediate access storage
- 22What does the Acc do?Accumulator- stores arithmetic data in multistep calculations
- 23What is a Register?Small high-speed memory contained within the CPU.
- 24What is ROM, what does it do?Read Only Memory stores the boot up instructions
- 25What does Volatile require?Volatile memory requires electricity to store data.
- 26What is Virtual Memory?Virtual Memory is an extension of RAM set up on the hard drive, used for when the RAM is full.
- 27What is Secondary Storage?Non-volatile storage used to save files and programs
- 28What is Flash Memory?Flash memory is a special type of RAM that is non-volatile.
- 29What is Software? The general term for computer programs
- 30what is secondary storage?permanently stores data when not being used and Storing backups so that the original files can be restored if anything happens. (a memory that is stored external to the computer. It is mainly used for the permanent and long-term storage of programs and data.)
- 31characteristics of secondary storagecost , reliability , durability , speed , portability and capacity
- 32types of secondary storagesolid sate (SS) , Magnetic and Optical
- 33Optical meaningA laser light is used to retrieve data from the surface of a disc.
- 34types of optical devicesCDs, DVDs , Blu-Ray
- 35Optical advantagescheap, lightweight, portable, reliable
- 36Disatvangesvery slow, easily scratchable
- 37Magnetic meaningNorth and South particles on the platter represent bits. Typically used for long-term storage.
- 38types of magnetic devicesHDD (Hard Disc Drives) , Magnetic Tape Cassettes
- 39Advantagescheap, large capacity, very reliable
- 40disatvangesif dropped will be damaged, slow to read/write
- 41Solid state meaningMicroscopic electronic switches are used to store bits and there are no moving parts.
- 42types of solid state devicesSSD , SD card , Flash drive
- 43Advantages
