Flashcards
Week 3: Tissues
Cards in this deck (28)
- 1Adipose TissueLoose connective tissue that reduces heat loss from skin, serves as a reserve energy source, and supports and protects organs. Located wherever areolar connective tissue is. Has a large triglyceride drop that pushes the nucleus to the edge of the cell
- 2Dense irregular connective tissuea connective tissue that provides tensile strength in many directions. It often occurs in sheets and is located in tissue beneath skin and around muscles and other organs, fibrous pericardium of heart, and joint capsules. It has collagen fibres
- 3FibrocartilageA type of cartilage connective tissue that supports and joins structures together. It's the strongest type of cartilage due to its strength and rigidity. Located in intervertebral discs, menisci of knee, and pubic symphysis
- 4Non-ciliated and ciliated epitheliumOnly occurs in simple columnar epithelium tissue where cilia line the cell surface. Non-ciliated has higher levels of secretion and absorption. Ciliated moves mucous and foreign particles across the tissue surface.
- 5Reticular connective tissueloose connective tissue that provides the stroma and scaffolding for the cells in some organs. Located in stroma of liver, spleen, lymph nodes, red bone marrow. Also around blood vessels and muscles
- 6Simple cuboidal epitheliumone layer of cuboidal cells. function is secretion and absorption (lower level than non-ciliated simple columnar). Located in lining of kidney tubules, covers ovary surface, and makes up secreting portion of glands.
- 7Smooth muscletype of muscle connective tissue that contains spindle-shape cells with one nucleus each. It allows you to direct your eyeballs. Located in the walls of the stomach, uterus and arteries. It also changes the internal volume of an organ as it contracts
- 8Areolar connective tissueloose connective tissue whose function is strength, elasticity and support. One of the most widely distributed connective tissue "packing material" of the body. Found in subcutaneous layer deeper to skin, around blood vessels, nerves, and body organs
- 9Elastic cartilagecartilage connective tissue that provides strength and elasticity, and maintains shape of certain structure. Located in epiglottis and parts of external ear
- 10Ground substance1 of 3 things that makes up connective tissue. It's the material that supports the cell and fibres and plays an active role in how tissues develop, migrate, and proliferate. Can be liquid (blood), gel (loose under skin), very hard (bone)
- 11Neuroncell that makes up nervous tissue. Communicated through nerve impulses
- 12Regenerationtype of tissue repair to restore homeostasis. new cells are identical to damaged ones
- 13Simple columnar epitheliumCan be ciliated or non-ciliated. Non-ciliated has higher levels of secretion and absorption, lubricated linings of digestive, respiratory, and reproductive tracts. Ciliated moves mucous and foreign particles across the tissue surface. Located in bronchioles, uterine tubes, central canal of spinal cord, and ventricles of brain
- 14Transitional epitheliumstratified epithelium tissue that allows urinary organs to stretch and maintain protective lining while holding variable amounts of fluid without rupturing. Located in lining of bladder and portions of ureters and urethra
- 15Cardiac muscleType of muscle connective tissue that's involuntarily controlled and usually has a single nucleus in each cell but can sometimes have two. Contains branching cylindrical cells and intercalated discs. It changes the internal volume of an organ as it contracts
- 16EndocrineGlandular epithelia that secrete hormones which are transported into blood without using ducts. Hormones regulate metabolic and physiological activities to maintain homeostasis. Located in pituitary gland, thyroid and parathyroid glands, and pancreas
- 17Hyaline cartilageProvides smooth surfaces for movement at joints, flexibility, and support. Most abundant cartilage in the body, located at ends of long bones, and embryonic and foetal skeleton
- 18Neurogliacells that have supportive functions in the nervous system (ie. protective and supportive cells)
- 19Replacementtype of tissue repair to restore homeostasis where new type of tissue develops, this may lead to scar tissue and loss of function.
- 20Stratified squamous epitheliumCan be keratinised and non-keratinised. Keratinised protects against abrasion, water loss, UV radiation, and foreign invasion. Forms superficial layer of skin- epidermis. Keratinised protects against abrasion and foreign invasion and lines wet surfaces
- 21Dense elastic connective tissueAllows stretching of various organs, is strong and can recoil to original shape after being stretched. Located in lung tissue, walls of elastic arteries, trachea
- 22Dense regular connective tissueHas collagen fibres. Provides strong attachment between structures, withstands pulling (tension) along long axis fibres. Forms tendons (attach muscle to bone) and most ligaments (attach bone to bone)
- 23ExocrineGlandular epithelium tissue that uses ducts that empty onto skin surface or into lumen of hollow organs. Produces substances and is located in sweat and oil glands, salivary glands, and pancreas
- 24Keratinised and non-keratinised epitheliumKeratinised epithelium forms superficial layer of skin and protects against water loss, UV radiation. Non-keratinised epithelium protects against abrasion and foreign invasion and lines wet surfaces
- 25Pseudostratified columnar epitheliumIs ciliated. Secretes mucous that trap foreign particles and sweep away mucous for elimination. Lines airways of most upper respiratory tract
- 26Simple squamous epitheliumOne layer of squamous cells that allows passage of materials by diffusion and filtration; secretion in serous membranes. Located in lining of heart, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels; forms the epithelial layer of serous membranes; air sacs of lungs; glomerular capsule of kidneys
- 27Skeletal muscleType of muscle connective tissue that is voluntarily controlled, striated, and is found attached to bone. It contains long non-branching cylindrical cells that have many nuclei. It's concerned with locomotion of the body as a whole
- 28Extracellular MatrixGround substances & protein fibres make up the extracellular matrix of connective tissue
