Cognitive Development - Bruner

ellie scott Children's Play Learning and Development BTEC English 9 cards

Cards in this deck (9)

  1. 1BrunerInfluenced by Piaget and Vygotsky
    Aim of education = create autonomous learners "discovery learning"
  2. 2Three stagesEnactive - actions
    Iconic - images and pictures
    Symbolic - words, symbols and language
  3. 3Enactive mode- Concerned with actions
    Example; an infants sight is linked with physical movements and behaviours
    rattle would be given to the infant and they will shake it and be alerted to the noise it makes, each time they have the rattle they will shake it. in this way the actual movements being made become encoded within memory through the infants reflex movements
  4. 4Iconic mode-Uses images and pictures
    A child can internally represent an object in the form of an image. Being able to do this allows the child to develop cognition significantly. Having the ability to hold and create images means that the child can now apply their internal processing objects that are not actually present in their environment.
  5. 5Similarities with PiagetSocio-Cognitive STAGE theory
    Enactive mode (action)
    Iconic mode (image)
    Symbolic mode (language)
    abstract thinking develops out of concrete thinking
  6. 6Similarities with VygotskyInterpersonal communication - necessary for development, not restricted to children
    Development relies on active invention- scaffolding and contingency rule (wood, 1980)
  7. 7Scaffolding (Wood, Bruner and Ross, 1976)Don't jus show child!
    Activities assist learning characteristics
    Encouragement = simplification
    Demonstration = highlighting
  8. 8Contingency Rule (wood, 1980)When child is struggling, offer more help as appropriate
    When child succeeds, reduce resistance
    From 'other regulation' to 'self regulation'
  9. 9Implications- Huge implication for education
    -Improvements transfer to similar tasks
    Raise qu's about extent of mother-child in day-to-day action
    Socio-cognitive account, interprets all
    Not restricted to children
