Question Answer
Frequency table Lists the categories in a categorical variable and gives the count of observations for each category.
Distribution The distribution of a variable gives the possible values of the variable and the relative frequency of each value.
Area principle Each data value should be represented by the same amount of data.
Bar chart Show a bar whose area represents the count of observations for each category of a categorical variable.
Pie chart Show how a whole divides into categories by showing wedges of the circle.
Contingency table Displays counts of individuals falling into named categories on two or more variables. Used to reveal possible patterns.
Marginal distribution The distribution of either variable alone.
Conditional distribution The distribution considering only a smaller group of individuals.
Independence Variables are independent if the conditional distribution of one variable is the same for each category of the other.
Segmented bar chart Displays the conditional distribution of a categorical variable within each category.
Simpson's paradox Relationships taken within different groups can appear to contradict relationships among the grand proportions.
Relative distribution The proportion (frequency) divided by the total count.
