MAC Sub-Layer

Charlie Tizzard Ó Kevlahan Computer Networking Bachelors Degree English 8 cards

Cards in this deck (8)

  1. 1What are the three basic approaches used to arbitrate access to a shared medium?Controlled access protocols, Random access protocols and Channelisation protocols
  2. 2List the three main types of channelisation?Frequency Division Multiple Access, Time Division Multiple Access and Code Division Multiplexing
  3. 3Explain polling?Polling uses a centralised controller which cycles through stations on the network and gives each an opportunity to transmit a packet
  4. 4How are tokens used to control network access? In a token passing system, when no station has any packets to send the token circulates. When a station captures the token, it sends its data, and when transmission is completed it releases the token
  5. 5What does CSMA/CD stand for?Carrier Sense Multi-Access with Collision Detection
  6. 6Explain CSMA/CDCarrier Sense - Requires each station to to detect whether someone is already transmitting before transmitting
Multiple Access - Allows multiple hosts to make use of common media
Collision Detection - A collision can occur if two stations wait for transmission stop and both start transmitting
  7. 7What is binary exponential backoff?Doubling the range of the random delay after each collison
  8. 8Why does CSMA/CD use a random delay?Randomisation is used to avoid having multiple stations transmit at the same time
