  2. 2Describe the nature of aid received by this country3 NGOs; Red Cross, Unicef and Oxfam have provided major help to Mali providing much needed necessities such as food and water. They received multi-lateral aid as each of the NGOs come from different countries. In addition to this Mali also received emergency aid to help with the immediate water shortages problems.
  3. 3Why was the aid needed?Due to Mali having such severe water shortages this has negative effects on crops, farmers, cattle and the economy and is the reason why they need aid. This is a huge problem as 80% of the population lives from stockbreeding agriculture.
  4. 4What impacts did did the aid have? They aid provided the opportunity for the country to develop. The NGOs helped to educate the people, brought 36000 heads of cattle and helped to improve health. Tis was also 1 of the 8 aims of the millennium development goals, they did this by giving £270,000 to treat 14,000 malnourished children for 6 months. The aid also sparked development within the country.
  5. 5Why was the aid unsustainable?Countries like Mali and Niger need a constant supply of aid as the originals problems are ongoing. They received the aid as a result of the 2009 drought, where little to none precipitation fell. This caused food shortages which caused a famine and affected the locals. Due to the lack of resources it causes neighbours to start to steal from each other. Droughts also have negative externalities on the environment by causing decertification and infertile soil
