THE CASE STUDY
The case studiy method
A case is basically a story. A case recounts events or problems in a way that students can learn from their complexities and ambiguities. Case studies can be used in education as a teaching tool. Many students learn better using real-life examples, and case studies can be effective way to learn in the classroom.
Elements to develop the case:
1. A decision marker who has a problem that needs to be solved.
2. A description of the context of the problem
3. Data that supports the study, which could include interviews.
Adventages;
Knowledge: Ability to remember information and ability to recall it.
Comprehension: This by using examples in a real-world context.
Application: Helps students understand how these ideas and theories are used in the real world.
Analysis: Ability to break down information so it can be better understood.
Synthesis: Ability to form news ideas. Case studies help this skill by requiring them to identify new information and concepts.
Evaluation: Ability to judge information for a particular reason.
Disadvantages
1. Students often fight for airtime, and may not fully think through their thoughts. Many students want to be first, and place more importance in that than being right.
2. Students in business management courses don’t always have the same background experience, and this can contribute to issues with experience.
3. The background information provided for the case analysis is often limited to whatever was supplied with the case.
Managing oral development a
Definition: Differentiation as creating a balance between academic content and students’ individual needs. They suggest that this balance is achieved by modifying four specific elements related to curriculum.
Elements:
Content: The information and skills that students need to learn
Process: How students make sense of the content being taught
Product: How students demonstrate what they have learned
Affect: the feeling and attitudes that affect students’ learning
Use:
The goal of differentiated instruction is to create learning opportunities that make allowances for differences in how individual students learn in order to ensure equal access to important academic content. Content may be modified for students who need additional practice with essential elements before moving on; however, the expectation is that modifications in other areas will ultimately allow all students to master the same key content.
It is important to recognize that differentiated instruction is an approach to teaching, not simply a collection of strategies or activities.
Reasons why teachers use it:
1. Get to know as much as possible about each student
2. Have high expectations for all students
3. Have a variety of research-based instructional strategies at hand
4. Use ongoing assessment to guide instruction
5. Provide multiple types of assessment
6. Differentiate homework Collaborate
7. Use flexible grouping
8. Make content comprehensible for all students
