Flowchart content

  1. Sampling Design

  2. the technique or the procedure the researcher would adopt in selecting items for the sample

  3. is

  4. Steps in a Sample Design

  5. 1. Type of universe: define the set of objects, technically called the Universe, to be studied

  6. 2. Sampling unit: may be a geographical one ( state, district, etc) or aconstruction unit (house, flat, etc.) or it may be a social unit (family, club, school, etc.), or it may be an individual.

  7. 3. Source list: also known as ‘sampling frame’. It contains the names of all items of a universe (in case of finite universe only).

  8. 4. Size of sample: this refers to the number of items to be selected from the universe to constitute a sample.

  9. 5. Parameters of interest: consider the question of the specific population parameters which are of interest.

  10. 6. Budgetary constraint: cost considerations, from practical point of view, have a major impact upon decisions relating to not only the size of the sample but also to the type of sample.

  11. 7.Sampling procedure: decide the type of sample that will be used.

  12. Different types of Sample Design

  13. Non-probability sampling :also known by different names such as deliberate sampling, purposive sampling and judgement sampling.

  14. Probability sampling: also known as ‘random sampling’ or ‘chance sampling’.

  15. items for the sample are selected deliberately by the researcher.

  16. a lottery method in which individual units are picked up from the whole group not deliberately but by some mechanical process.

  17. Complex Random Sampling Design

  18. 1.Systematic sampling

    2.Stratified sampling

    3.Cluster sampling

    4.Area sampling

    5.Multi-stage sampling

6.Sampling with probability proportional to size

    7.Sequential sampling
