Writing a Case Study

1. Elements of a Case Study

   • Introduction
     • It establishes the problems and provides the limitations of the situation.
   • Overview/Analyusis
     • It provides scenarios which are a detailed narrative of the situation, in chronological order with no foreshadowing.
     • It uses language to influence the decisions to any side
     • It should bring the case up to the present
     • The information here is regularly included into the status report
   • Status Report
     • It presents the situation to date but does not offer the solution to the problem
   • Case problem
     • Here the tasks are set but no the solution to the problem.
     • Learners analyse the faults and recommend how it should be handle.
   • Appendices
     • Here it can be included additional information of the case to serve as a teaching tool. they can be as long as it should be necessary.

2. Constructing Teaching Notes

   • Synopsis
     • it only provides an overiew of the key ussue of the case
   • discussion outline/Questions set
     • It provides the guidelines for how to teach the case, key questions, appropriate answers or discussion points.
   • Tips for resolving the case problem
     • the instructor provides some suggestions to resolve the problem, but allows the students to determine their own activities.
   • Apprendices
     • They may include: bibliography, glossary of relevant terms, list of other activities , exercises, original documentos from real situations only with persmission.
   • Educational Objectives
     • It includes a discussion of the learning points raised by the case.

3. Evaluating a Case Study

   • It is done to evaluate its suitability,
   • A brief memo should be prepare, to outline the use of the case and the discussions generated from it. In other case the study may become obsolete or irrelevant.
   • The instructor will annotate the teaching notes.
