Banquo

  1. Suspicious

    • A danger to Macbeth as he has always bee suspicious of his behaviour
      • "Good sir, why do you start and seem to fear, things that do sound so fair?"
        • Sibilance- creates a hissing noise similar to that of a snake, this symbolises the evil that Macbeth will do.
        • Banquo is confused about Macbeth's negative reaction- he knows something is wrong
        • We later lean that Macbeth flinches in association with the guilt he is feeling due to his plans to murder the king
        • "Good sir" is ironic- especially to Macbeth and members of the audience that know the plot, for Macbeth is thinking dark thoughts and certainly not behaving in a good nature.
          • But it does show us the trust and goodness in Banquo's nature viewing Macbeth as good despite the evil of the situation (witches and all) could also be described as naive
    • "If you can look into the seeds of time and say which grains will grow and which will nor, speak then to me,"
      • Extended metaphor of growth used throughout the play
        • Shows how everythin ]g starts of the same in life and itis unknown where people will end up
      • Questioning the witches- shows braveness as he is standing up to a great, supernatural power.
