Making Esters

  1. Carboxylic Acid + Alcohol <--> Ester + Water

    • CH3COOH + CH3OH <-->CH3COOCH3 +H2O
  2. Acid Anhydride + Alcohol -> Ester + Carboxylic Acid

    • (CH3CO)2O +CH3OH -> CH3COOCH3 + H2O
    • Advantage: Reaction is not reversible
    • Disadvantages: Acid anhydride is more expensive and more dangerous than carboxylic acid
  3. Acyl Chloride + Alcohol -> Ester + Hydrogen Chlordie

    • (Hydrogen chloride acidic fumes)
  4. Acyl Chloride + Phenol -> Ester + HCl

    • e.g. Ethanoyl Chloride + Phenol -> Phenyl Ethanoate + Hydrogen Chloride
  5. Acid Anhydride + Phenol -> Ester + Carboxylic Acid

    • e.g. Butanoic Anhydride + Phenol -> Phenyl Ethanoate + Ethanoic Acid
