Map content

1.2 Memory

  1. ROM- Small piece of memory which helps turn on the computer.

    • Non-Volatile- All data is not lost when power is off
    • Holds the first instructions for the computer known as the bootstrap
  2. RAM- Temporary storage of instructions for programs being executed by the processor

    • Volatile- So all data is lost once power is off
    • Holds the operating system and data used in the CPU while its on
  3. Hard Disk memory holds more storage then RAM

  4. When RAM storage is full the instructions not being used get transferred to Virtual Memory

  5. And data on Virtual memory cam not be executed as it would be too slow

  6. When programs are needed they're transferred back to RAM

  7. Flash Memory is both Volatile and Non Volatile and both read and write

  8. Used to retain settings when power is tuned off

  9. Much more reliable as there are no moving parts

  10. Used as permanent storage for phones ect.
