MSM

  1. Strengths

    • it has applicability
      • applicable to everyday life
    • Useful to remember
  2. weaknesses

    • shallice and warrington
      • Shallice and warrington oppose the MSM because their case study of KF, he had damage to his STM but was still able to make new long term memories (bypassing the STM) which suggests that memory is not a linear process suggested by the multistore memory model and that information does not need to be rehearsed
  3. supporting evidence

    • Sperling(1960)
      • Gave participants a grid of letters for a short amount of time and asked them to write down all 12 items or just one row. this shows how the SR has a duration of about 2 seconds, this means they would be forgotten relatively quickly.
    • Glanzer&Cunitz(1968)
      • primary and recency effect, you are most likely to remember words at the beginning and end of the list. this supports the msm because the words at the beginning of the list would go into your ltm because you would have time to remember the words at the end of the list because you are asked to repeat them before 15 seconds so they would still be in your stm, the words in the middle group would have been forgotten.
