Map content

RAM, ROM AND VIRTUAL MEMORY

  1. RAM stands for random access memory and stores temporary storage for open programs while using a computer. ROM stands for read only memory and contains the boot up instructions. Also ROM can't be written over. Virtual memory is an extension of RAM and is used when the RAM is full of data. Virtual Memory is set up on the hard drive.

  2. ROM is non volatile as it contains the boot up instructions however RAM and Virtual Memory are volatile. RAM is volatile as it only contains data from open programs and deletes that data as soon as the computer is turned off. Virtual Memory stores data when RAM is full so its an extension of RAM. As soon the the computer is switched off the RAM is emptied and there becomes no reason for the Virtual Memory to store data.

  3. Volatile Storage is storage which deletes itself when a device is turned off. An example of volatile storage is RAM.

  4. You find RAM and ROM on the motherboard which is located near the top of then computer. Virtual Memory is located on the hard drive which is located usually in the bottom right of the computer

  5. RAM looks like this
