   • when ram is full, it is put on the hard drive, it simulates memory
   • it runs applications
     • it lets more memory used than there is in the system

4. flash memory is used in usb, memory cards, and solid state drives

   • advantages: durable, can be lost easily, is expensive, uses up in a period of time
