1. What is the 5S system?

   • It is a work place organization method
   • Just in Time manufacturing
   • Comes from Japan

2. Whats does each 'S' mean?

   • Sort (Seiri)
     • Sort work areas out
     • Sort out what is needed and what is not
     • Evaluate necessary items with regard to cost or other factor
   • Set (Seiton)
     • Make sure everything has a place
     • Prevent loss and waste of time
     • Easier to find and pick up necessary items
   • Shine (Seiso)
     • Inspect everything while cleaning
     • Looks for abnormalities
       • Lots of waste
       • Tools always missing
       • Cleaning up the same waste every day
       • Prevent machinery and equipment deterioration
       • Keep workplace safe and easy to work
     • Use cleaning as inspection
   • Standardise (Seiketsu)
     • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness
     • Everything in its right place
     • Maintain everything in order and according to its standard
   • Sustain (Shitsuke)
     • To keep in working order
     • Also translates as "do without being told"
     • Perform regular audits

3. Good and Bad 5S

   • Good
     • Can make things easier to find for everyone
     • Safety levels could be increased
     • If its done right it will be good
   • Bad
     • Everyone needs to be doing it
     • It takes time to perfect
     • If it goes wrong it goes very badly

   • Increases productivity
   • Decreases waste
   • Increases efficiency
