Reading Fluency

  1. lack of reading fluency also is a reliable predictor of reading comprehension problems

  2. Three elements:

    • accuracy
    • rate
    • prosody
  3. A fluent reader can maintain performance for long periods of time, retain skills, and generalize across texts

  4. A reader who reads words incorrectly is unlikely to understand the author's intended message, which can lead to inaccurate interpretation of the text

  5. Oral reading automaticity captures processes related to reading such as sound-symbol relationship, accessing word meanings, and connecting to prior knowledge

  6. Prosody helps assess if a student is understanding what he/she is reading. If reader has strong prosody skills, then he/she is able to understand what the author is saying.

  7. Assessments

    • repeated readings
    • repeated readings with recorded models
  8. Provide opportunities for language play

  9. Repeated access to clearly articulated letter sounds (reading with a recording)
