1. Print Server

   • share common printers

2. File Server

   • store programs and data files
   • multiple users
   • high speed LAN or WAN
   • acts like remote disk drive
   • shared files and printers

3. Authentication Server

   • access list + identifies permitted access credentials
   • can be on a separate server or part of another server

4. Mail Server/ Message Server

   • post office facilities
     • storing incoming mail or messages
     • forward outgoing mails or messages

5. Proxy Server

   • isolates internal clients from servers
     • downloading and storing files on behalf of clients
   • intercepts requests for web based or other resources
   • no data in cache - new packet request using itself as source or relay the request
   • data cache
     • improve client response time and reduce network traffic
       • provide frequently used resources to clients from a local source

6. DNS Server

   • common conventions across the internet
   • hierarchical naming system
   • database of domain and host names and corresponding IP addresses

7. DHCP

   • automatically assign IP addresses
   • on servers or network devices
     • firewalls, ISDN routers, modem routers

8. Web Server

   • external users
   • access to website content
   • internal - intranet
