  1. Inkjet Printers

    • Uses moving ink nozzles to spray ink droplets on paper that create images/text
    • For colour images/text, a combination of three colours (blue, yellow, magenta) are used in specific amounts to create the desired colour
    • Types of Inkjet printers
      • Thermal bubble: Resistors heat the ink until it becomes a bubble and then bursts over the desired area. It also creates a vacuum that sucks up more ink
      • Piezoelectric: Small crystals give an electric charge to the ink, which makes it vibrate. These vibrations cause the ink to be ejected from the nozzle, and draws more ink from the inside.
  2. Laser Printer

    • Uses static electricity to coat the page with dry ink in certain areas to create images/text
      • A positively charged rolling drum is given a negative charge in certain areas that exactly match the images/text by a laser. .
        • Positively charged ink powder is applied, which sticks only to the negatively charged parts of the drum.
          • A negatively charged sheet of paper is rolled under the drum, and the ink sticks to the paper, creating the images/text
  3. Differences between Inkjet and Laser Printers

    • Inkjet printers spray ink using moving nozzles
      • Inkjet printers print line by line
        • Inkjet uses liquid ink
          • Inkjet is slow and of less-quality but cheaper, hence better for small amounts
    • Laser printers use static electricity to make ink stick to paper
      • Laser printers print the entire page together
        • Laser uses dry powder ink
          • Laser is much faster and produces better quality, and is better for large volumes
