The Internet

  1. Networks

    • Computer Network
      • A computer network is a digital telecommunications network which allows nodes to share resources. In computer networks, computing devices exchange data with each other using connections between nodes.
      • Internet Cables
        • A submarine communications cable is a cable laid on the sea bed between land-based stations to carry telecommunication signals across stretches of ocean and sea. ... Modern cables use optical fiber technology to carry digital data, which includes telephone, Internet and private data traffic.
    • A network is a collection of computers, servers, mainframes, network devices, peripherals, or other devices connected to one another to allow the sharing of data. An excellent example of a network is the Internet, which connects millions of people all over the world
  2. domains

    • .com
    • .net
    • .gov
    • .uk
    • .org
    • .co.uk
  3. World Wide Web

    • www.
    • The World Wide Web, commonly known as the Web, is an information system where documents and other web resources are identified by Uniform Resource Locators, which may be interlinked by hypertext, and are accessible over the Internet.
  4. Bandwidth

    • Bandwidth is defined as a range within a band of frequencies or wavelengths. Bandwidth is also the amount of data that can be transmitted in a fixed amount of time. For digital devices, the bandwidth is usually expressed in bits per second(bps) or bytes per second.
    • The Amount of data that can be carried at a time
      • A Good analogy is the amount of water that can be carried down a single pipe at one time - It all depends on the size of the pipe.
  5. Download/Upload Speeds

    • In most circumstances, such as on a mobile phone, the download speed is faster than the upload speed, as it is used more often. Although, in some circumstances where uploads are more frequent, the opposite is true.
  6. Broadband

    • a high-capacity transmission technique using a wide range of frequencies, which enables a large number of messages to be communicated simultaneously.
  7. Ethernet

    • Uses twisted pair copper cabling/ fibre optics.
      • The Difference Between Fiber and Copper Underlying technologies cause the bandwidth gap between fiber and copper. ... Copper uses electrons for data transmission, while fiber uses photons. Light is faster than electrical pulses, so fiber can transmit more bits of data per second and offer higher bandwidth.
  8. Wireless connection

    • Relatively inexpensive, easy to set up, can be used easily from a distance, easily accessible.
    • Less secure, interference, Connection is limited to a certain distance, slower.
  9. Buffering

    • Buffering allows a streamed video or media file to be loaded while the user is watching or listening to it. Buffering works by pre-downloading and stores video in a temporary cache before playback begins on whatever device you are using.
