Probability experiments

  1. When the probability is "fair", each event has an equal chance of happen, if the probability is "biased", the probability won't be equal. Relative frequency is used to estimate the probablity in a baised circumstance

  2. to find an events frequency, you must do an experiment multiple times and count how many times each outcome happens

  3. Relative frequency = Frequency ÷ Number of times the experiment was done

    • The relative frequency is used as an estimate of the probability of possible outcomes
      • the more times an experiment is done, the more accurate the result is
      • If the relative frequency is far from what is expected, it is probably biased. If not, then it is probably fair.
  4. In experiments that have multiple stages, then the results can be recorded as a frequency tree (tree diagram)

  5. You can estimate the number of expected times of an outcome by doing the experiment n times

    • the expected frequency is based of the probability of a result happening
      • Expected frequency = probability x number of trials
        • if you don't know the probability, in the same equation, use the relative frequency instead
