Input/Output Device Functions

1. Touch Screen

   • Used widely on mobile phones, tablet PCs and interacitive whiteboards. Used as an input device by tapping the screen or using gesture control. Used as an output device by viewing the display.

2. Keyboard

   • Commonly used data entry method - the user presses a key and a code is entered into the computer. Speciality keyboards are used in restaurants where each menu item is pressed to take an order.

3. Pointing Devices Mouse

   • A mouse is the most popular pointing and selection device used computing; touch pads and trackballs are also types of pointing devices that are used on laptop/netbook computers

4. Micropone

   • Microphones used to input sound into a computer system, often used in video conferencing and voice recognition software.

5. Barcode Scanner

   • Barcode readers are used to input data automatically from barcodes. The barcode reader scans the barcode using a visivle red light, which is then used to identify the details of a product.

6. Joystick/Games Controller

   • Foystick is used to play computer games by controlling the way that something moves on the screen; it can also be used to control devices such as a wheelchair

7. Webcam

   • Digital image captured and input into system for use in on-screen display or video conferencing

8. Sensors

   • Sensors are used to detect physical variables for input into a computer control system, such as temperature, pressure and light.
