- Allows a user interface
- It translates code and makes the hardware do what its meant to do

BIOS (Basic input/output system)
- It allows you to set up the boot order. This is useful because if you need something on a memory stick so that a new operating system is installed it allows you to load it first
- It allows you to set up a password on your BIOS so no-one can mess up your computers settings and you can keep it the way you like
- It allows you to change the amount of memory you commit to the graphics. This is useful because if you use your computer for gaming you can change how good the graphics are.
